Lost and Found

Just once I’d like to see President Obama mention in his annual Adoption Month proclamation that tens of thousands of adult adoptees have their rights trampled upon each and every day that they are denied fair and equal access to their original birth certificates. Just once I’d like to hear him acknowledge that such records are critical to adoptees’ rights to know who they are and where they come from.

Adoption Month

Wow, I didn’t realize that there was only one actual month to be aware of adoption. Hey, how about the past 50 years, state of Ohio, when my birth records were locked up tight so I have no way of knowing if I can prevent some disease or understand my genetic background to make informed choices – that everyone who is not adopted simply takes for granted.
Think about it-Angelina Jolie may have saved her own life by knowing her mother carried a gene for breast cancer. I not only have no idea who my birth parents were but have no medical background either and this is the crux of the issue. The laws are going to kill adoptees who were lucky enough to be adopted after 1964 and before the time when open adoptions became allowed years ago.
But alas none of this matters really because in the end, being adopted means you have no idea who you are. And that you have to learn to live with. Just don’t say “happy” adoption awareness to any adoptee – unless you want your teeth knocked out.
